Five Ways Community Affects Homeschooling
On May 20, 2026 by Anna De LayAs homeschoolers, it is very easy to allow connection with others to fall by the wayside. We are independent, self-reliant people. But humans were designed for connection with God and with each other. Keep reading for five reasons to stay connected to community.
1. Community keeps us from isolation.
โEncourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.โ 1 Thess. 5:14
They say loneliness is an epidemic. Though homeschoolers don’t always acknowledge it, it is easy to become lonely at home when we fail to meet regularly with friends.
Action step:
Commit to meeting with other homeschoolers at least on a weekly basis, whether at enrichment classes, sports events, or play days. Meet more than once if possible.
2. Community helps us grow.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.โ Proverbs 27:17
I saw a quote not too long ago that read, “Growth doesn’t happen in isolation.” How true is that? We need others to help us, encourage us, and even challenge us to reach our potential.
Action step:
Be encouraging to others when you meet together. Notice their gifts and positive attributes and lift them up. Remember their passions, dreams, desires, and aspire to support them in achieving those things.
3. Community helps us put our faith to action.
โShare with the Lordโs people who are in need. Practice hospitality.โ Romans 12:13
Whenever our family has been in need, our church, homeschool friends, and our families have helped us make it through the hardship. And we’ve done the same for others in our community. What a blessing it is to give and to receive. Faith put to action reminds us that we are not alone.
Action step:
Who needs you today? Write a note of encouragement to someone going through a hard time. Tell someone you’re thinking of them. Visit someone who needs uplifting. Think of something you could do to help someone and go do it.
4. Community allows us to use our God-given gifts.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve othersโฆโ Luke 6:38
God created each of us with various gifts and talents that were meant to be shared with one another for the purpose of growth. In any homeschool community, some are great at serving, some at organizing events. Others are good at speaking or cooking the best food or leading groups. We need each other!
Action step:
What gift or knowledge do you possess that can benefit your homeschool community? Can you teach a class? Organize an event? Volunteer for something else? Ask God where He can use you the most.
5. Community gives us a place of belonging.
โMay the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each otherโฆโ Romans 15:5-7
There is something about knowing you have people who love and support you and stand beside you. There is something about knowing you’re not alone that gives you a confidence to do and be who you were made to be. This is how God designed us — to be in community with one another.
Action step:
Don’t wait for others to encourage you or support you or cheer you on or make you feel at home. Be that person first. Be the one who speaks life into someone else and gives to others without expecting anything in return. God always returns the favor.
